Two key injury setbacks trouble Ipswich before Sheffield Wednesday match

Kieran McKenna has delivered an injury update on several Ipswich Town players as the promotion-chasing side prepare for a trip to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium.

Wednesday finally halted their miserable 14-match losing streak after earning a 1-1 draw against Watford. The Owls looked set to claim their first victory of 2026, but they were denied late on when Vivaldo Semedo scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the Hornets.

It was a frustrating sense of déjà vu for Wednesday supporters. Just as in December’s reverse fixture at Vicarage Road, the Owls took the lead only to concede a dramatic late equaliser from Semedo after the 90th minute.

Ipswich targeting promotion push

Next up for Wednesday is a tough encounter with Ipswich, who are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier Leaguefollowing last season’s relegation.

The Tractor Boys have been in impressive form recently, suffering just one league defeat since Christmas Day.

However, McKenna has confirmed that Marcelino Núñez will miss the trip to Hillsborough after suffering a hamstring injury.

The Chile international picked up the problem during the early stages of Ipswich’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City last weekend. Although he remained on the pitch until late in the match, he was absent from the squad during Tuesday’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Watford.

McKenna revealed that Núñez will definitely miss the clash with Sheffield Wednesday and is also unlikely to feature in the following fixture against Millwall.

“It’s a hamstring injury he picked up during Saturday’s game,” McKenna explained.

The 26-year-old has been a key figure since arriving from Norwich City in the summer, contributing three goals and 10 assists in the league this season.

Matusiwa also doubtful

Ipswich could also be without another summer signing, with Azor Matusiwa currently a doubt due to a hamstring concern.

McKenna admitted the club are still assessing the severity of the midfielder’s injury.

Previous meeting

The two sides last met in December, when Ipswich claimed a 3-1 victory.

Goals from Cédric Kipré, Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke secured the win for the Tractor Boys. Liam Cooper pulled one back for Wednesday with his first league goal for the club in the second half.

Ipswich will be hoping to repeat that result as they continue their push for promotion, while Wednesday aim to build on the momentum from finally ending their long run without a point. ⚽
