Two leading contenders surface as Middlesbrough start search for Rob Edwards’ successor

Middlesbrough’s Managerial Situation: Edwards Nears Exit as Two Leading Candidates Emerge

Middlesbrough appointed Rob Edwards in the summer as Michael Carrick’s successor, and the 41-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to life at the Riverside, guiding Boro to third place in the Championship table.

However, his future on Teesside has been thrown into doubt amid strong speculation linking him with a move to Wolves. Reports suggest that after initially blocking an approach, Middlesbrough have now granted Edwards permission to speak to the Premier League club, following his absence from training on Friday. The club hierarchy are said to be unhappy with Edwards’ conduct, given the short time he has been in charge.

With his departure appearing imminent, Boro have already turned their attention toward potential replacements.

According to talkSPORT, former West Brom boss Carlos Corberán is high on their shortlist, with the Spaniard’s position at Valencia also under scrutiny following a poor run of form in LaLiga.

Meanwhile, Millwall manager Alex Neil has also emerged as a strong contender. Reports from Football Insider claim Boro are monitoring the former Sunderland and Norwich City boss closely.

Both coaches bring valuable play-off experience — something Middlesbrough may need later in the campaign. Corberán reached the Championship play-off final with Huddersfield Town and guided West Brom to the semi-finals in 2024. Neil, meanwhile, has two play-off triumphs to his name, having led Sunderland to promotion from League One in 2022 and Norwich City to the Premier League in 2015 — defeating Middlesbrough in the final.

The pair’s current fortunes could also influence Boro’s decision. Neil is enjoying a strong season at Millwall, sitting sixth in the Championship after a 1-1 draw with Preston North End, while Corberán’s Valencia side languish 19th in LaLiga and are winless in their last six matches.

As Middlesbrough prepare for life after Rob Edwards, play-off pedigree and current form could prove key factors in deciding their next managerial appointment.
