Anthony Elanga named UEFA Man of the Match in Newcastle’s record Champions League win
Anthony Elanga was awarded UEFA’s Man of the Match as Newcastle United cruised to a 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.
The Swedish winger played a key part in two of the goals during the Magpies’ biggest-ever win in the competition. Elanga’s cross helped set up Nick Woltemade’s opener before he won the penalty that Anthony Gordon converted to double the lead. Gordon later scored a second spot-kick, while substitute Harvey Barnes sealed the result with a late finish after replacing Elanga in the 73rd minute.
Although Elanga has yet to record an official goal or assist since his £55 million summer switch from Nottingham Forest, his influence in Brussels earned him UEFA’s top individual award.
Reflecting on the recognition, Elanga said:
“I’m happy with the award, it’s always special to get recognition but this was thanks to the team, really.”
Despite Gordon’s brace and Woltemade’s continued fine form—his third goal in four starts—UEFA singled out Elanga for his overall impact. Sandro Tonali and Malick Thiaw were also praised, but it was Elanga’s contribution that ultimately earned him the Man of the Match honour.
