VAR CONTROVERSY: Reason why Brighton 22 year-old forward was not awarded a Penalty kick after an obvious foul from Manchester City player Josko Gvardiol during Brighton Fc 0 – 4 Man City match
They thought they should have had a goal in the second half of their Premier League game against Manchester City.
There was a penalty call against Manchester City in the second half of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Premier League game that made them very angry.
With ten minutes left in the first half, the Blues were already well ahead of the South Coast. Kevin De Bruyne scored the first goal with a great flying header, and Phil Foden scored two more goals to put the game out of the hosts’ reach.
In the second half, Julian Alvarez scored a fourth goal to not only win the game but also make it 4–0 for City, which could be very important in the race for the title. But the Seagulls thought they should have had a chance to get back in the game with 25 minutes left.
Joao Pedro broke into the area, and it looked like Josko Gvardiol clipped the forward, who then fell to the ground badly. There were loud boos from the home fans, but referee Jarred Gillett ignored the calls for a penalty kick right away.
VAR looked into what happened, but they decided there wasn’t enough proof to overturn Gillett’s ruling on the field. The broadcast team thought Pedro went down too quickly for a penalty to be given, but the technology at Stockley Park couldn’t give the Brighton forward a yellow card.
For this reason, VAR can only overturn a decision and give a penalty if they believe the referee made a “clear and obvious error.” They can’t tell the official to give yellow cards. If a player gets a red card, VAR can tell the referee to show one. Simulation does not fall into this category.
