VAR CONTROVERSY: Reason why FC Bayern Munich goal was disallowed during the UEFA Champions League match vs Real Madrid

According to Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, the assistant referee talked to the players right after taking away their late goal against Real Madrid because the players were offside.

Real Madrid beat Bayern 2-1 at the Bernabeu, sending them out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.

They went ahead 1-0 thanks to a great right-footed shot by Alphonso Davies. At the other end, goalie Manuel Neuer was in great shape to keep the score the same.

But Neuer made a mistake that let Joselu sneak in and poke the ball into the net to tie the game at 88 minutes.

Real then took the lead for the night and the tie two minutes later when Joselu scored from Antonio Rudiger’s cross. This caused a stir inside the Bernabeu when VAR changed a decision that the goal should not have counted because the player wasn’t onside.

There was then a goal for Bayern when Konrad Laimer headed Thomas Muller’s cross into the bottom corner, but referee Szymon Marciniak had already blown his whistle to show that Bayern players were offside.

And VAR couldn’t change the decision because the whistle had been blown during play, stopping the move from happening.

But replays showed that the call to stop play early was very close. The Bayern players were angry about it.

In an interview with TNT Sports after the game, Tuchel said that the assistant judge apologized to the Bayern stars right away.

He said, “It was a terrible call by both the linesman and the referee.”

“That choice makes me feel like I was betrayed in the end.” We do have to praise Real Madrid, though.

“Sorry, linesman, but that doesn’t help at that level. In the last minute, if there is a close call, the judge does not have to whistle in order to raise the flag.

“That choice was awful, and it’s against the rules.” Unfortunately, that’s the truth.

Later, Max Eberl, the sports director of Bayern Munich, told Sky Sports Germany that Marciniak had told him he was sorry for what happened.
