“We are not friends” – Al Nassr player Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney both states their reason why they can’t be friends even after playing together at Manchester United
As teenagers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney played football together at Manchester United. Since then, their friendship has become tense.
Two names that come to mind when you think of Manchester United are Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
Ronaldo joined from Sporting CP in 2003, and Rooney followed a year later from Everton. Both players are considered to be among the best of their age. If there was any doubt about whether they lived up to their full promise, Ferdinand won the Ballon d’Or during his six years at United, and Rooney scored more goals than any other player in club history.
During their five years at Old Trafford, they had the best teamwork possible. They dominated on the field and often got together off the field to play jokes on Sir Alex Ferguson and their more serious teammates. Ronaldo moved on to Real Madrid in 2009, which put an end to the party. He was ready for a bigger stage.
During that time, their friendship went through rough spots just like any other. England and Portugal were playing in the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals when Rooney, then 20 years old, stomped on Ricardo Carvalho’s crotch, which caused a fight. In order to get an edge with the score tied at 0-0, Ronaldo rushed to the referee to protest, and he was able to help get his club teammate sent off. That made Rooney angry, so he pushed the Portuguese forward. The Portuguese player then shook England by smiling at his bench.
There was then talk in the media about whether their fight would spread to the United locker room before the 2006–07 season. Still, they were able to clear the air in the tunnel right after the game, which brought them closer together.
When asked if he would have done the same thing with Ronaldo, Rooney told the Sunday Times in April 2020, “I went over to him afterwards in the tunnel.” I thought it was best to talk to him in person while the memory was still new.
“I told them, “I have no problems with you. Have fun with your game and best of luck. “See you in a few weeks, and let’s go try to win the league.”
That turned out to be true when United’s two best players raced to win their first Premier League title the next year, six points ahead of second-placed Chelsea. During the rest of their time together at Old Trafford, they won two more titles and the Champions League. It was entertaining to watch.
Ronaldo set up 14 goals for Rooney, and the flashy winger got help from Ronaldo 11 times. The two played together 205 times. They didn’t run into each other again until Ronaldo came back to Manchester for a second time in September 2021.
Because of the move, both of their boys, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. and Kai Rooney, now play for the Red Devils’ U12s team. But while the two teens were having a great time playing together and hitting the net with ease, the two legends were getting more and more angry with each other behind the scenes.
Their friendship was ruined forever when Rooney, who was retired at the time, said bad things about Ronaldo’s actions during his second season at United. Rooney didn’t like how Ronaldo wouldn’t come on the field while his team was losing to Tottenham in October 2022. He called Ronaldo a “unwelcome distraction” at United.
“The things he has done from the beginning of the season are not acceptable for Manchester United,” said the head coach of Birmingham City who was just fired.
Ronaldo said that the words “surprised” him. When he heard that Rooney was upset about his still-growing job and good looks, he didn’t take it lying down. In his shocking interview with Piers Morgan, he seemed to imply that Rooney was jealous.
Ronaldo said in the interview that his contract with Manchester United was ripped up, “It was a year ago or six months ago.” “There we are in my house. He came to pick up his kids and invited Cristiano to play football at his house.”
“I don’t know why he criticizes me so badly,” the Al-Nassr leader said. It’s likely because he’s retired and I’m still playing at a high level. After making fun of her again, he said, “I’m not going to say that I look better than him.” That’s right.
