Ryan Mason revealed he was carefully managing Mikey Johnston’s workload during Monday’s clash with QPR, as the winger continues to step up and fill the gap left by Tom Fellows.
Johnston once again proved decisive, providing the pinpoint free-kick that set up Nat Phillips’ headed winner.
The 26-year-old now sits top of the Championship assist charts with nine for the season. However, despite his influence, Johnston was substituted midway through the second half for Isaac Price — a decision that was met with boos from sections of the home support at The Hawthorns.
Johnston had been close to sealing a summer move to Brazilian giants Flamengo, but he remains a key figure for Albion as Mason looks to balance his impact with concerns over fatigue.
