After an eight-goal drama against Derby County and a 7-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers at the CBS Arena in the first few Championship games, it would have been reasonable to anticipate that Coventry City would continue to improve.

However, the Sky Blues have been unable to capitalise on their success, as they have been unable to recover from their humiliation of Julien Stephan’s Hoops team.

Coventry City achieved only a 1-1 draw with Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium before the international break. Subsequently, they have encountered difficulty in accumulating three points.

Norwich City recently conceded a draw in the final phases of their match, and they were unable to score in the M69 derby against their rivals, Leicester City, this past weekend.

Haji Wright is the subject of criticism following a disappointing run of form for Coventry City.
Despite having an abundance of talent at their disposal, Coventry’s attacking impetus has certainly diminished in recent games, as evidenced by their rapid decline from 12 goals scored in two matches to two goals scored in their last three.

The decline in performance has also occurred during a period in which manager Frank Lampard has been associated with his former club, West Ham. Although Graham Potter has not yet been terminated, he is facing mounting pressure following a subpar start to the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Coventry may now be able to breathe a sigh of relief on that front, as the BBC has reported that Slaven Bilic, Gary O’Neil, and Nuno Espirito Santo are the managers on the Hammers shortlist. However, their performance on the pitch remains a cause for concern.

Chris Deez, a City fan and pundit for FLW, has expressed his apprehensions regarding the team’s recent performance. He has even singled out star striker Haji Wright for his underperformance in front of goal, despite the fact that he is presently the joint-top scorer in the division.

Chris stated to FLW, “I would like to claim that I am taken aback by the three consecutive draws, but I am not.”

“We are not nearly as clinical in front of goal as we should be if we are to pursue automatic promotion or the play-offs.”

“I simply do not believe that it will occur with Haji Wright at the front, as he has scored five goals for us thus far, which on paper appears to be a significant number. However, he could have scored three times as many.”

“However, he is not diligent enough, lacks clinicality in front of the goal, overlooks sitters, and is simply unmotivated.”

“However, the sole backup we have is Ellis Simms, and this is what drove me insane. People were claiming that we did not require a large squad depth because we had acquired the stadium, and that was the most significant signing in our club’s history.”

“Yes, I concur; however, we continue to require additional depth.” The ownership of our stadium is irrelevant; it will not increase our chances of winning contests.

“On paper, a clean sheet and a draw at Leicester are exceptional results; however, the two draws that preceded it were not. Consequently, we are now under pressure to defeat Birmingham at home next week.”

Rushworth, our custodian, was named Man of the Match against Leicester, which is quite significant, is it not? Our custodian has been the most impressive player of the day, and they have completely dominated us.

“We have had opportunities to score, and we have had opportunities to draw three games in a row without conceding. However, we concede sloppy, cheap, and terrible goals on a weekly basis.”

“The 5-3 victory over Derby appeared to be an exceptional accomplishment on paper; however, we conceded three goals that were fairly subpar.” I believe that these three draws in a succession will resurface at a later date in the season. However, Leicester is the one with which I am most satisfied.

“When you draw 0-0 away to a parachute payment team, a promotion favourite, you have to be satisfied with the strength of their team. However, the two results that preceded it are, in my opinion, four points that were lost.”

Coventry City should not be overly concerned at this time, as the Championship is an unpredictable division.

No other teams have demonstrated complete consistency, with the exception of Middlesbrough, who are undisputed at the top of the table after winning five of their first six matches. This is unsurprising, given that the transfer window has closed only a few weeks ago.

Coventry though made minimal changes to their squad over the summer though, with just four new signings arriving at the CBS Arena, and of those, only Carl Rushworth is starting regularly right now in-between the sticks after his arrival from Brighton on loan.

Therefore, it could be argued that Coventry should have been more prepared for the league than the majority, and they were undoubtedly demonstrating this in the first few games. However, their prolific nature has already diminished.

This could potentially change in the weeks leading up to the October international break. Additionally, Birmingham City is scheduled to visit this weekend, which presents an ideal opportunity for Lampard’s team to regroup and resume their winning streak.
