John Souttar contract latest: talks, wages and what happens next at Rangers
John Souttar is one of several Rangers players approaching the end of his deal — and uncertainty continues to surround his future at Ibrox.
The 29-year-old defender, who originally agreed a pre-contract before joining in 2022, sees his current terms expire on 31 May. With just months remaining, Souttar is now eligible to discuss a move elsewhere — a scenario the Rangers hierarchy will be desperate to avoid.
How are contract talks progressing?
The most recent update emerged in December, when reports suggested Rangers had tabled a new offer. It was claimed the club proposed a two-year extension that would keep Souttar at Auchenhowie until 2028.
The same report indicated the Scotland international would receive a notable pay rise as part of the proposed deal. However, no official confirmation has followed, leaving his situation unresolved as the season enters a crucial phase.
With uncertainty around ownership changes and long-term planning, securing key assets like Souttar could prove pivotal.
What does Souttar currently earn?
Souttar is believed to be on wages of around £12,000 per week — a figure many would argue does not reflect his importance to the side when fully fit.
For comparison, club captain James Tavernier, whose contract is also nearing expiry, is reportedly earning close to £40,000 per week. Given Souttar’s role as a regular starter and experienced presence, a significant salary increase would likely form part of any renewal agreement.
What has Danny Rohl said?
Manager Danny Rohl has made it clear he values Souttar highly. When available, the centre-back has been a key figure under Rohl, although a muscle injury earlier in the campaign ruled him out of nine matches for club and country.
Ahead of a European fixture against Ferencvaros in December, Rohl underlined Souttar’s importance, describing him as a core member of the squad. He praised the defender’s experience, leadership and understanding of what it means to play for Rangers — especially in the demanding Saturday-to-Thursday schedule.
Rohl also stressed the need for a strong leadership group to help guide younger players, hinting that the club had already made its intentions clear regarding a renewal.
What happens next?
With 33 appearances this season and a consistent presence when fit, losing Souttar for free would represent a significant setback.
Whether an agreement is reached in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Rangers face a major decision. Tie down one of their defensive leaders — or risk watching him walk away for nothing this summer.
