Why Andy Walker thinks Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate’s Celtic careers are over

Former Celtic striker Andy Walker has delivered a damning assessment of the futures of Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda at Parkhead.

Hatate has faced mounting criticism for a dip in form, most notably after conceding a penalty in midweek as Celtic left it late to overcome Livingston. Walker believes the midfielder may now need time out of the side, suggesting his overall contribution has fallen short of expectations in recent weeks.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Walker admitted the penalty incident could have been avoided and questioned Hatate’s broader impact on the match, hinting that a spell on the bench might be the right call.

Maeda, meanwhile, has also struggled to replicate last season’s levels. After being named Celtic’s Player of the Year, the forward has endured a frustrating campaign, compounded by the collapse of a proposed summer transfer. Walker feels the disappointment may have taken its toll, with the Japan international looking short of confidence and rhythm.

The former Hoops striker went further by predicting that this could be the final season at Celtic for both players. While acknowledging their past contributions, he suggested the club may need to freshen things up in the summer, with significant changes expected.

However, replacing Hatate and Maeda would not come cheap. Their market value has dipped compared to previous peaks, meaning Celtic could face a costly rebuild if both depart.

For the players themselves, the message is clear: rediscover form quickly. If Celtic’s title ambitions falter and performances remain below par, criticism will only intensify — potentially impacting not just their futures, but their legacies at the club.
