Why it makes sense for Danny Rohl to bench John Souttar

Danny Rohl has now overseen six competitive fixtures as Glasgow Rangers manager, giving him enough time to form early judgments about his squad after being thrust straight into action upon his arrival last month.

Each match has offered valuable lessons for the former Sheffield Wednesday boss, while the current international break provides a welcome opportunity to pause, reflect, and evaluate the opening stages of his Ibrox tenure. A 3–0 victory over Dundee at Dens Park ensured Rohl went into the break with three consecutive league wins, yet back-to-back Europa League defeats make it clear that plenty of work still lies ahead.

During this international window, Rohl has also been able to observe several of his players representing their countries, offering him new insight into their form and confidence levels away from the club.

One player who may have damaged his chances at club level is centre-back John Souttar, who endured a difficult outing for Scotland in their defeat to Greece on Saturday.

Why John Souttar deserves to be dropped from the Rangers XI

Rohl may now be justified in removing the defender from the starting lineup after a poor performance that drew heavy criticism, particularly for his part in Anastasios Bakasetas’ opening goal. BBC Sportscene pundit James McFadden did not hold back, saying:

“That is a nightmare. John Souttar completely misjudges the flight of the ball. He has to take command of that situation.”

The Rangers defender ended the 3–2 loss with zero ground duels won, two attempted, and one error leading to a shot—on top of his misjudgement for the opening goal, according to Sofascore.

Unfortunately for Souttar, this display mirrors his club form this season. After a solid 2024/25 campaign, the 29-year-old’s performances have dipped noticeably, leaving Rohl with a major decision to make during this break.

Crucially, Rohl has alternatives—and one in particular deserves a chance.

Why Rangers should now turn to Emmanuel Fernandez

Emmanuel Fernandez arrived from Peterborough in the summer, with Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony calling the transfer a “blockbuster” move. Yet the promising English defender has barely been used, making only 181 minutes of appearances across all competitions so far.

In his first start for Rangers in the League Cup against Alloa Athletic, Fernandez showed glimpses of his ability, even scoring his first goal for the club in a 4–2 win.

While Souttar earned praise last season—winning 74% of his ground duels and rarely being dribbled past (only twice in 24 league games)—his current form suggests he is no longer the reliable presence he once was.

Given his decline and Fernandez’s potential, Rohl may be wise to bench Souttar and unleash the younger defender in the heart of the Rangers back line.
