The referees for the first round of Premier League matches have been disclosed, featuring Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
Newcastle United’s Premier League campaign commences with a road match against Aston Villa on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off). Despite the fact that all of the victories have been achieved at home, Eddie Howe has a perfect record on the opening day of the season with Newcastle United during his tenure as head coach.
Newcastle United’s credentials will be put to the test by Unai Emery’s team at Villa Park, and both teams will be eager to make a strong start after a difficult conclusion to the previous season and a summer of frustration in the transfer market. The games between these two teams are typically highly entertaining, and the victor, if there is one, will be aware that they have had to fight for all three points.
The two clubs have been separated by very little in the league rankings over the last couple of seasons, with goal difference being the only factor between them last campaign, despite the fact that recent games between Newcastle and Villa have not been close in terms of scoreline.
Aston Villa vs Newcastle United referee appointment has been confirmed by the Premier League.
Craig Pawson will serve as the referee for the match at Villa Park on Saturday, according to the Premier League. Pawson also supervised Newcastle United’s inaugural match of the previous season, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for Eddie Howe’s team over Southampton, who had recently been promoted.
After Fabian Schar was issued a straight red card, the Magpies were compelled to play with a ten-man squad for more than an hour, despite their ability to defeat Russell Martin’s team on the basis of a single Joelinton goal. Despite the fact that there was negligible contact between Schar and Saints striker Ben Brereton Diaz, Pawson issued a red card to the Magpies man following their encounter.
Brereton Diaz soon became a pantomime villain at St James’ Park, and the decision prompted much debate in the terraces and for days after the incident. Howe characterized it as a “really harsh” red card at the time, stating, “I believe it is really harsh on Fabby.”
“However, it is widely recognized that the referee is not permitted to issue a red card, and this is a lesson we should all take away.”
It was the first of four Magpies games that Pawson would oversee last season, and controversy was never far from the Sheffield-based whistler. He awarded Newcastle United a penalty after a VAR review in his subsequent match at Goodison Park.
On that particular day, Anthony Gordon, who was manning the striker position, was unable to convert the penalty against his former team. Subsequently, the Toffees expressed their dissatisfaction with not being awarded a penalty of their own, which stemmed from a collision between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn. In May, Pawson was also responsible for Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, during which he awarded the Magpies three penalties. However, the first two penalties were later overturned by VAR.
In between those games, there was a comparatively uncontroversial match at St. James’ Park against West Ham. On that day, Howe’s team suffered an unexpected 2-0 loss.
Pawson will receive assistance from Constantine Hatzidakis and Nick Hopton at Villa Park tomorrow, with Simon Hooper serving as the fourth official. Tim Robinson will provide support to Peter Bankes in the operation of VAR at Stockley Park.
