Wilfried Nancy breaks silence with first remarks after being named Celtic boss

Wilfried Nancy has given his first interview since being confirmed as Celtic’s new manager.

The French coach arrives at the club with a strong reputation earned through his work in MLS with CF Montréal and, most recently, Columbus Crew, who he departed after their MLS Cup play-off exit.

He takes over from Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney, who had been guiding the team on an interim basis.

Reflecting on his appointment, Nancy praised both O’Neill and Maloney for their recent contributions, saying they had served the club brilliantly and expressing his admiration and appreciation for their efforts. He added that he hopes to meet them soon to thank them personally.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Nancy described becoming Celtic manager as a huge honour for him and his family.

He said on the club’s website: “I am absolutely delighted to take on the role of Celtic Manager. It’s an incredible privilege. Before anything else, I want to acknowledge the work done by Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney over the past few weeks. They have done a tremendous job, and now it’s my responsibility to build on what they’ve started and keep driving this club forward.”

Nancy called Celtic a truly iconic football institution with passion, tradition, and high expectations — qualities he says he fully embraces.

He emphasised that he understands the club’s history, values, and standards, and knows exactly what will be required of him.

“My main objective is clear,” he said. “I want to give our supporters an exciting, attacking, winning team they can be proud of. I can’t wait to get started, meet the fans, and hopefully share many unforgettable moments together.”
