Callum McGregor, a midfielder for Celtic, just got back from illness and Brendan Rodgers is likely to rely on him in the last few games.

This season, the Hoops leader has played in 38 games across all competitions, scoring two goals and setting up five others [Transfermarkt].

Rodgers has been careful with his game time since he missed four games and Scotland’s March international matches because he was hurt. We beat St. Mirren 3-0 last weekend and played against Rangers at Ibrox after coming off the bench.

The Irish player might be smart to limit his playing time. He doesn’t know how important his leadership skills will be as the season comes to a close and we try to win both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup.

Tomoki Iwata has done a good job filling in at holding middle while he was away, and Paulo Bernardo can also bring something new to the engine room.

Regardless, McGregor is what makes Celtic work, and we need him to be here if we want to have a good end to a crazy season.

Mark Guidi on whether or not Callum McGregor will start this weekend

The short trip for Celtic to Hampden this weekend is to play Aberdeen in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. On May 25, they will play one of Heart of Midlothian or Rangers for a spot in the final two.

Because of our future games after the split, journalist Mark Guidi has thought about whether he thinks McGregor will be able to start at the national stadium, taking into account his situation.

He said on the Go Radio Football Show, “He came back into the team against Rangers off the bench. It was his pass across the field that set up one of Rangers’ goals, but it looks like he’s ahead of schedule.”

“We told him on Friday night that he would sit on the bench on Saturday and come on.” It seems more likely that he will play against Aberdeen on Saturday, but they won’t want to take a chance.

“With all due respect to the Scottish Cup, the five league games are what matter most.” Callum McGregor should be at his best for the first game after the break because it’s what’s best for him.

Guidi is right; Celtic should only put McGregor on the field at the start if they are sure he can handle things without any big problems.

Iwata has played a big role in the team and is ready to go if we need him, which makes us feel better about the holding midfield spot.

In order to win the Scottish Premiership, we will need McGregor, and we don’t want to hurt his hopes of being a big part of the last few games of the season.
