Middlesbrough accuse Wolves of breaching Premier League rules in pursuit of Rob Edwards

Middlesbrough have reportedly accused Wolverhampton Wanderers of breaching Premier League regulations over their approach for manager Rob Edwards.

According to journalist John Percy, the Championship club have criticised Wolves for acting “below the standards expected” as speculation intensifies around Edwards’ future following the dismissal of Vitor Pereira at Molineux.

The 42-year-old, who enjoyed four years as a Wolves player and briefly served as interim manager, was only appointed by Middlesbrough in the summer to replace Michael Carrick. Edwards has guided Boro to a strong start this season, earning widespread praise for his impact.

In a statement reported by Percy on X, Middlesbrough said:

“Unfortunately, Wolves have behaved at a standard less than we expect and we believe their conduct is in breach of Premier League regulations.”

Reports from Sky Sports suggest Edwards has been stood down from his role ahead of Saturday’s Championship clash with Birmingham City, while his pre-match press conference was cancelled on Friday — further fuelling rumours of an imminent exit.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Middlesbrough are now resigned to losing their manager after less than six months in charge. Edwards is believed not to have taken training this week, with sources indicating he is the frontrunner to succeed Pereira at Wolves.

The move has sparked controversy, with the Teesside club frustrated by what they perceive as an improper approach. Wolves, who sit near the bottom of the Premier League, are eager to appoint Edwards to help steer them clear of relegation danger.

For Middlesbrough, however, the situation has quickly become messy. The breakdown in relations could make it difficult for Edwards to continue at the Riverside even if the deal collapses. The lure of returning to Molineux and managing in the top flight again appears to be a major factor in his decision-making.

Boro fans are understandably disappointed given the team’s promising start to the season, but the ongoing dispute and claims of a rule breach risk souring what had been a positive early campaign under Edwards.
