Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson praises team’s determination in vital win at Charlton

Phil Parkinson lauded the determination of his Wrexham team after they preserved their impressive away form with a narrow 1-0 victory at Charlton.

The Red Dragons have now collected 16 points from their last six away fixtures, strengthening their push for a remarkable fourth consecutive promotion. Oliver Rathbone, who recently extended his contract until 2028, netted the decisive goal in the 30th minute.

Wrexham, currently sixth in the table, were forced to dig deep under sustained pressure from the hosts. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo proved pivotal, producing a superb late save to deny Sonny Carey an equaliser.

Looking ahead to next weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round clash with Chelsea, Parkinson said his side showed “incredible resilience” and highlighted key defensive interventions from Issa Kabore and George Dobson, as well as Rathbone’s composed finish. He also praised Okonkwo’s crucial stop, describing it as “match-winning.”

Parkinson added that Wrexham’s defensive work inside the penalty area was outstanding, with players repeatedly winning first and second balls. He admitted missed chances in the second half created tension but felt his side managed the game well, particularly after introducing Dan Scarr and Zak Vyner to help see it out.

Charlton, meanwhile, were left to rue missed opportunities. Luke Berry and Harry Clarke both failed to capitalise on first-half openings, and the Addicks’ struggles in front of goal at home continued.

Manager Nathan Jones labelled his side’s display “outstanding” but was frustrated by their lack of finishing, insisting they created enough chances to score three or four. He praised his team’s overall dominance but conceded that Wrexham’s clinical edge proved decisive.
