Wrexham lodge offer for Sammie Szmodics as Ipswich’s asking price emerges

Wrexham have tabled a £5 million offer for Ipswich Town attacker Sammie Szmodics, according to reports. The ambitious Welsh club are looking to outmanoeuvre Derby County in the race for the experienced forward.

Derby are understood to have already seen a bid knocked back, with Ipswich standing firm over their valuation. The Suffolk club are believed to be seeking a fee closer to £6m for Szmodics, who signed a long-term contract after arriving from Blackburn Rovers in 2024.

The 30-year-old endured a frustrating spell with injuries over the past year, missing a large portion of the latter half of last season as Ipswich slipped to relegation from the Premier League. Despite that setback, he remains a player with a proven record at Championship level, which has fuelled interest from multiple suitors this window.

Ipswich Town have been tipped to mount a strong push for promotion from the Championship this season under Kieran McKenna, but questions remain over Sammie Szmodics’ role moving forward.

Eighteen months ago, Szmodics was making headlines by scoring at the Etihad Stadium in Ipswich’s early Premier League fixtures. Signed for around £9 million after a prolific spell at Blackburn Rovers — where he struck 33 goals in all competitions — the forward showed flashes of quality in the top flight, finding the net against both Manchester City and Tottenham. However, injuries disrupted much of his campaign, limiting his impact as Ipswich eventually suffered relegation.

Fitness issues have continued to interrupt his momentum this term. Although he began the Championship season in the starting line-up, further setbacks have seen him miss a significant number of league matches. He has recently returned and was on target against former club Blackburn in a convincing win, yet ongoing competition for places and his stop-start run have fuelled talk that a change of scenery could suit both player and club.

That is where Wrexham come into the picture. The ambitious Welsh side are reportedly keen to offer Szmodics a fresh opportunity as they continue to make bold moves in the market.

Wrexham’s intent has already turned heads, with reports of a club-record £19 million bid for Angers striker Sidiki Cherif underlining the scale of their plans. Backed by owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club are signalling their determination to establish themselves as serious contenders. A move for Szmodics fits that pattern, targeting a forward with proven Championship pedigree who could rediscover consistency in a new environment.
