‘Unbelievable’ Newcastle United player is omitted from matchday squad following extended injury absence
Newcastle United’s prominent player is excluded from the matchday squad following an extended period of injury, which is considered “unbelievable.
“Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United were defeated 2-0 by West Ham United at St James’ Park on Monday night, and Lewis Miley was excluded from the matchday squad.
Miley has yet to appear in the Premier League for Newcastle this season, despite his return from a protracted injury absence. His sole appearance for The Magpies this season was as a stoppage-time substitute in the 2-0
Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park just last month. After his breakthrough season was cut short by a back issue, the 18-year-old has not played in the Premier League or started a match for Newcastle since March.
Following his recovery from the injury, Miley fractured his metatarsal in anticipation of his return to preseason training. This injury ultimately resulted in his absence from June to October.
Consequently, when Miley was not included in the Newcastle squad, there was concern that he had experienced a setback following his England Under-21s debut during the international break.
Miley’s departure from the team was actually motivated by tactical considerations rather than fitness, as a result of the return of Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson from injury.
Sandro Tonali was the sole recognised central midfielder on the substitute, as per head coach Eddie Howe.
Wilson and Will Osula were the attacking options, while Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, and Miguel Almiron were on the bench as wide options.
Trippier and Matt Targett were the only defensive options available, as Dan Burn was suspended for the match, and Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth are still injured. The bench was completed by Martin Dubravka, who served as the substitute custodian.
Burn is expected to rejoin the matchday squad at Crystal Palace on Saturday (3pm kick-off). However, Miley may be summoned to the squad at Selhurst Park due to injury concerns that affect Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes.
“He has made the most significant physical progress,” he stated. “When Lewy first joined the team, he appeared to be a large individual for his age, but his muscle definition may not have been as developed as it is now.
That is simply a result of the passage of time. “However, he has exerted himself intensely to enhance his physical capabilities and fortify his body during his injury.”
He appears to be an extraordinary athlete at this time. “He defies his age in terms of his appearance, behaviour, and playfulness.”
It is a testament to the high regard in which England and we hold him that he is able to play for the England Under-21s at the age of 18. Miley became the youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer for Newcastle last December, scoring in a 3-0 victory over Fulham at St James’ Park after coming off the bench.
He featured 26 times for the club that season. The academy graduate also participated in the Champions League, contributing an assist in the 2-1 loss to AC Milan immediately preceding Fulham’s victory.
Miley’s position in Newcastle’s midfield has been undermined by the return of Joe Willock and Joelinton from injury, as well as Sandro Tonali from a suspension. However, Howe maintains that the youngster has a promising future.
The Newcastle manager further stated, “His career is in a favourable position.” “We will continue to further develop him if we can maintain his fitness, and I am confident that he will play for us on numerous occasions.”
