Latest transfer news on Celtic player Matt O’Riley move to Southampton

After reading a lot of trade rumors, it looks like many teams want to sign Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.

At one point or another, clubs like Inter Milan, Manchester United, and Atletico Madrid were all said to be trying to sign him. In January of this year, the La Liga giants had a bid turned down.

Before Brendan Rodgers took over, O’Riley looked like a class act at Celtic, where he improved under Ange Postecoglou and even more so under Rodgers. He moved there for £1.5 million from MK Dons.

The Danish international was one of Celtic’s most sought-after players, with 19 goals and 18 assists and strong play in the Champions League. As we talked about this morning, Southampton, a new team in the English Premier League, could make a record-breaking offer for him.

The news spread quickly among Celtic fans, and Southampton fans also spoke out about how they felt about their team making yet another move to the east end of Glasgow.

Fans of Southampton want Matt O’Riley because “he’s got some talent.”
The price is said to be around £20m, but could go up to over £25m with add-ons and bonuses. All of Southampton’s fans agree that the talented 23-year-old should be bought:

One Southampton fan asked the club to give the Celtic midfielder a huge pay raise, saying, “He’s reporting around £25k a week. I’m sure we can offer him nearly double that, given that Jack Stephens makes £45k a week and some players at the club make near £70k a week.”

Another fan says that no amount of money should stop anyone from getting O’Riley from Celtic:

Another Saints fan said, “I’d be pretty amazed if we signed Matt O’Riley.” He said this because he likes the Danish player but doesn’t think his team would pay anywhere near £30m for him.

“He turned down the chance to join Atletico Madrid in January.” I also think it’s very unlikely that we’ll spend £30m on anyone this summer.

“He has some skill, but I don’t see it.”

He needs to fix his mistake and say that O’Riley didn’t turn down Atletico but Celtic, but his main point is still true. He really likes them.

Another fan is less sure that they can get O’Riley for the price that was said to be:

Some Southampton fans don’t agree, though, and these four words say it all for all Celtic fans this morning:

When I think about how much money is being spent on players down south who have never played in the Champions League or won a trophy, I have to agree with that last Southampton fan: £25m would be a steal, and Celtic would be letting down both themselves and the fans if they went through with it.
