Crystal Palace F.C. (#6 / Defender) Marc Guehi speaks on the failed transfer deal of £70m to Newcastle United last summer window

Marc Guehi talked about Crystal Palace’s rough start to the season after his move to Newcastle United fell through in the summer.
In the last month of the summer transfer window, Guehi was Newcastle’s top target. However, a deal fell through because Palace wanted more than £70 million for the England center-back. The Magpies didn’t want to pay more than £55 million up front, but they are still interested in the 24-year-old player and might try to make a deal in January.

Newcastle will have more power in negotiations with Guehi during the last 18 months of his deal, so they will likely be able to get a lower fee. It is thought that the Palace management was tense about the decision not to cash in Guehi in the summer.

The club has also had a rough start to the new Premier League season. They are currently in the relegation zone and have lost all seven of their games so far. Guehi’s club play has also gotten worse since he did so well for England at Euro 2024.

When asked about the start of the season, Guehi told talkSPORT, “I’d say it’s been pretty tough not having a pre-season, not having much of a break, and going right back into it.” “I think I did the best I could with it.” “The Euros were so much fun, but we just weren’t quite there yet.”

People thought Guehi might join Newcastle in the summer, but when he spoke in public, he wanted to stress his dedication to Palace.

“Since then, I’ve just tried to keep my head down and get to work,” he said of the move rumors at Newcastle. “Palace has had a rough start, but I think everyone is working together to get back to where we want to be.”

The summer, Newcastle’s sporting director Paul Mitchell tried to make a deal with Crystal Palace to get Guehi, but he couldn’t get it done with Palace boss Steve Parish.

When Mitchell thought back on the summer transfer window, he said, “Every player we looked at, Ed wanted to explore, try to sign, or have a long conversation with.”

“He wasn’t part of the decision-making process when it came to any player who got to the point where they were being talked about in terms of their connection to the club that currently holds their registration and their real intent to try to sign that player.”

That “guy” was Guehi in the summer. Now Newcastle has to decide if they want to put Palace to the test again in January.
