Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, emphasised during a speech in Liverpool that smartphones have “no place in our schools” and that the government is “fully behind” the sector in prohibiting them. Additionally, she stated that the education sector will face additional challenging considerations in the future.

A Labour MP has requested that all eligible students be automatically provided with free school meals.

A Labour MP has stated that the decision not to lift the two-child benefit limit is “extremely painful” and that all eligible children should be automatically enrolled in free school meals.

Peter Lamb, the Member of Parliament for Crawley, informed the Commons that it is imperative to take all feasible measures to prevent the demonisation of individuals who receive benefits.

At present, households that have a combined annual net income of £7,400 or less, excluding benefits, are encouraged to enrol their children in free school meals.

Lamb’s Free School Meals (Automatic Registration of Eligible Children) Bill suggests the automatic registration of all children who are eligible for free school meals, with the option for parents to opt out.

During the second reading, Lamb stated, “If this government is to be assessed on anything in the next five years, it should be its treatment of the most vulnerable members of our social fabric.”

The decision not to promptly lift the two-child benefit cap has been extremely painful for me, as it has been for many members of my party.

“We do not need further reports on how this has been one of the most significant drivers of child poverty under the last government, and at this point I do not believe the book shows at the House of Commons library could support any more evidence were it to be submitted.”
