Celtic have been dealt another setback after defender Colby Donovan withdrew from the Scotland Under-21 squad due to injury.

The right-back picked up a knee problem during Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Dundee United on Sunday, raising fresh concerns ahead of a crucial period for the club.

Donovan suffered the injury in unusual fashion — colliding with an advertising hoarding as he attempted to keep a cross in play. After receiving treatment on the pitch, he was unable to continue and was replaced, forcing a reshuffle in Celtic’s defensive setup.

Right-back concerns growing for Celtic

The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse. Donovan had started Celtic’s last two matches, stepping in for Julian Araujo, who is currently sidelined.

With Alistair Johnston also out injured since October, Celtic are now facing a potential shortage of options at right-back ahead of their upcoming clash with Dundee FC on April 5.

There are even fears that manager Martin O’Neill may be forced to rethink his system entirely, with a switch to a back three now a real possibility.
