Celtic Transfer Update at the Midpoint: Pursuit of Kyogo Furuhashi, £15 Million Winger Acquisition, Challenges, and Kieran TierneyAs of the midpoint of
the transfer window, Celtic has not yet engaged in any significant transfer activities for 2025. However, there remains a considerable possibility that this situation will alter prior to the deadline, which is set for 11 PM on Monday, February 3.
To date, we have finalised only one transfer, which is the loan of 25-year-old central defender Stephen Welsh to the Belgian club KV Mechelen. The Scottish defender has experienced a significant reduction in playing time under the management of
Brendan Rodgers and will be participating in the Belgian Jupiler League for the latter half of the season.Following a period of heightened activity on deadline day during the summer, which saw the acquisitions of Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, and Luke McCowan, there exists the possibility of similar late developments.
Brendan Rodgers has openly expressed his intention to enhance the attacking dimensions of his squad.Let us commence with striker Kyogo Furuhashi, who has garnered significant acclaim at Celtic since his arrival in the summer of 2021.
The Japanese hitman will celebrate his 30th birthday on Monday, and there is considerable speculation regarding his future with the reigning Premiership champions.
Although Furuhashi is under contract with Celtic until the summer of 2027, he has been the subject of significant speculation regarding a transfer to MLS club Atlanta United,
with reports from the American league mistakenly indicating that he had already made the move. Additionally, on Thursday, French Ligue 1 club Rennes surfaced as a possible destination for him. Furuhashi transitioned to a new agency last year, and the prospects of his long-term tenure at Parkhead remain uncertain.
Luis Palma is another Celtic forward whose future seems to be in a state of uncertainty. The Honduran – who turns 25 on Friday – is another whose route to the first team has been blocked this season, primarily down to the form of Daizen Maeda and Nicolas Kuhn in the wide areas.
It seemed that Palma was on his way to Spain, with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano widely linked with a loan-to-buy option, but earlier this week they were hit with a three-window transfer ban by FIFA for unpaid fees. At present, Palma will not be proceeding to that location.
Removing Palma from the roster would liberate financial resources and salary allocations, thereby facilitating the acquisition of an additional winger. In light of James Forrest’s injury, Yang Hjun-jun stands as the sole senior wide player available.
However, it is noteworthy that the South Korean has not demonstrated prolific scoring ability during his 49 appearances for the club, having found the net on only two occasions. Consequently, it is not unexpected that two wide players have been suggested as potential acquisitions for Celtic during this transfer window.
