“frustrated” – Celtic F.C player Alistair Johnston delivers a strong message over their performance in Copa America after Argentina defeats canada (2-0)
It was somewhat effortless to overlook the fact that Alistair Johnston still had unresolved business in the Copa America this summer, as Scotland’s elimination from Euro 2024 effectively terminated Celtic fans’ interest in international football.
The Celtic defender has been a standout in the tournament and has assisted Canada in making history this summer.
A victory over Venezuela secured Johnston’s spot in the semi-finals, setting up a match against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Johnston and his Canadian teammates were optimistic about securing a spot in the final against Uruguay; however, they were ultimately eliminated in a 2-0 loss at the Metlife Stadium, as Julian Alvarez (22m) and Lionel Messi (51m) scored goals.
Johnston expressed frustration regarding his exit from the Copa America.
Alistair Johnston has been a reliable member of his national team during the Copa America. It is reasonable to say that Canada was the unexpected surprise of the tournament. Despite Argentina’s status as heavy favorites entering the semi-final, the Celtic defender was devastated by the loss.
Johnston stated [TSN], “We cannot become excessively aggravated by the disparity.” It is the most exceptional team in the globe. For the past century, it has been the source of players who have been enshrined in the pantheon of the finest of all time.
“Consequently, you are unable to assert that you are taken aback by the disparity.” It is discouraging because we have now reached a point where we can compete with these teams.
“And once more, we generate opportunities.” I believe that the most frustrating aspect is that if you receive one of those in the first half, it may be a different affair.
“And the script is strikingly similar to the first time we performed them.” They scored a single goal, and they did not generate many chances in the first half. Subsequently, we had a few significant opportunities.
“They then score that goal, and then again, a slight lapse in concentration in the second half results in an easy goal, and the game is clearly beyond their reach.”
“And even then, we still had opportunities, but it was evident that they were considerably more at ease with their circumstances.”
“Frustrating in that regard, as we are edging ever closer.” Once more, our ascent has been swift in the past few years.
“And to think that you are even enraged that we are being eliminated from the Copa America semifinal by Argentina, yet at the same time, that is what you desire.”
“You desire to experience frustration.” You should have the impression that we were present, rather than simply stating, “We shared the pitch with them.” We are not experiencing that.
“We are experiencing a sense of “I wish we could have a little more there,” which is the most frustrating aspect for me.”
Alistair Johnston’s performance in the Canada vs Argentina match
Against Lionel Messi’s team, the Celtic defender executed an impressive performance. Johnston was Canada’s second-best performer on the night and held his own against the current world champions, earning a rating of 6.7 from Fotmob.
Johnston endeavored to isolate the Argentinians in the Canadian defense by winning fouled duels. Additionally, the Hoops hero executed five defensive actions, recovered six balls, intercepted one, and cleared two.
Additionally, Johnston has completed 53 passes with an accuracy rate of 87% and has been involved in 65 touches. Additionally, the Celtic star maintained a dribbling accuracy of 100% and was only dispossessed once by his opponents.
The 26-year-old will now enjoy a well-deserved respite before returning to Glasgow and Celtic to prepare for the upcoming season and the 2024 USA Summer Tour.
