It is not sustainable. Pep Guardiola has recently verified a significant alteration at Manchester City in anticipation of the summer.
Man City is anticipated to undergo significant changes this summer, and Pep Guardiola has recently verified that one such change will occur at the Etihad. Kevin De Bruyne’s announcement that he will be departing Manchester City this summer has already initiated the summer of change. The 33-year-old will depart the
Etihad after a decade of service, although it is highly probable that additional prominent figures will follow him out of the Manchester City stadium. There is considerable uncertainty regarding numerous players, with Kyle Walker appearing to be the most recent casualty. Walker is not included in Man City’s plans for the upcoming season, according to recent reports, and he is free to depart. In other news, there is speculation that
Real Madrid is monitoring Bernardo Silva, who is widely regarded as a player who should be transferred by many Manchester City fans. Additionally, the futures of John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan, and Jack Grealish appear to be dubious. Hugo Viana has been appointed as the director of football at Manchester City for the summer, a decision that underscores the club’s aspiration to begin anew following the challenging 2024/25 season.
According to Pep Guardiola, Manchester City will not have a substantial first-team roster in the upcoming season. Man City has frequently maintained an exceptionally sizable first-team roster in previous seasons. It is arguable that this has been a critical factor in Pep’s success at the club, as he has been able to rotate players almost every week and recruit world-class players,
thereby allowing Man City to remain competitive and fresh. This season, it appears that Pep has attempted to deviate from that. Despite the fact that the majority of the loan departures are of younger players, Manchester City have signed seven new players in 2024/25, sold five on a permanent basis, and loaned out eight.
However, it indicates a transition to a more compact and consistent Manchester City squad. Pep verified to the press that he will not have a large first-team squad next season, stating, “I am uncertain about the situation [this summer],” prior to Man City’s match against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Certainly, the club is operational; however, we will not have a roster of 45 athletes. It is not emotionally sustainable for the team.
“We must observe the behaviour of all other contracts, with the exception of Kevin [De Bruyne], until the end. We will observe how they behave and how we behave.”The five Manchester City players who are not under contract in 2026 De Bruyne, Gundogan, and Scott Carson are the only players who are not under contract in 2025. It is possible that all of them will depart as free agents.
However, Pep’s remarks above may be more pertinent to individuals who are not under contract in 2026. Stones, Ederson, Silva, James McAtee, and Stefan Ortega are all out of contract at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. Consequently, Pep and Viana may attempt to recoup some of their funds by selling these players, who appear to be deadwood, before they are ultimately lost.
Viana and Pep are anticipated to engage in ongoing discussions regarding the retention and departure of players, despite the fact that the season has not yet concluded. This is due to the fact that Man City have arguably more work to do than any of their Premier League competitors at this time. The match against Crystal Palace is scheduled to commence at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
