Newcastle United player Kieran Trippier fires out a brutal defensive message over recent criticisms on England coach Gareth Southgate on his performances at EURO 2024
Trippier has supported England’s manager after being criticized before their quarterfinal match against Switzerland at the 2024 Euros.
Kieran Trippier thinks that England boss Gareth Southgate’s “remarkable” record has not been fully recognized. England will play Switzerland in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 on Saturday night in Dusseldorf. This will be Southgate’s fourth straight trip to the last eight of an event.
In 2018, he led England to the semi-finals of the World Cup. In 2020, they lost the Euro final to Italy on penalties, coming closer than anyone else to winning their first major men’s title since 1966.
With this match against Switzerland, Southgate will have managed England in 24 big tournaments, which is nine more than any other manager in history. It will also be his 100th game in charge of the senior national team.
The historic event happened at the same time that Southgate was getting a lot of bad press for how England played in Germany, and Trippier spoke out in support of the former defender.
When asked if Southgate, who has won more playoff games than any other manager since 1966 put together, thought his work was not rated highly enough, he said, “If people are undervaluing his record, then I think it has.”
“I honestly believe that everything Gareth has done since taking over has been truly impressive.” We had a lot of meetings when I first got here to talk about what it means to play for England, and he really brought the team together from the time he took over until now.
“You’ve seen how much he’s grown.” Furthermore, I believe that what he has accomplished for England is truly amazing. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I think Gareth knows what the players and I think of him. We all respect him because he is an amazing person.
In the last four, England would play either Turkey or the Netherlands if they beat Switzerland. Switzerland has never won a big tournament quarterfinal.
There have been many claims that Southgate’s team has a better draw because Spain will play France in the other semi-final, but Trippier says they will not be taking the Swiss lightly.
According to the Newcastle back, “They are a very well-drilled and organized side.”
“They have really great players.” They play a method called 3-5-2, and they have for a long time. Thus, we’ve worked very hard on it this week in response to that press, and it’s now up to us to deliver.
They will, of course, be very motivated to win a quarterfinal against England. We should always accept those who disagree with us. We know the game will be tough, but we’re ready for it. We did a great job of getting ready, and everyone is calm and excited for the game.
Trippier is likely to start tonight at right wing-back because Southgate likes the Newcastle United star more than Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
