Pep Guardiola specifies the number of new deals he intends to make for Manchester City in January.
Reports indicate that Manchester City have received an explicit request from manager Pep Guardiola in anticipation of the forthcoming January transfer window.
The Catalan head coach is currently experiencing the most challenging stretch of his Etihad Stadium tenure, having lost eight of his last 11 matches in all competitions. This includes disastrous outcomes against Tottenham, Feyenoord, and Manchester United.
Manchester City’s difficulties this season have been primarily attributable to the severe personnel issues that have plagued the team, particularly in the defensive positions, which have been significantly impacted by the pervasive injury issues.
Consequently, in an effort to salvage the campaign and guarantee that City at the very least secure UEFA Champions League football for the 2025/26 season, Pep Guardiola is requesting that his hierarchy take action next month.
That is the information provided by Manchester City insider ‘Tolmie’s Hairdoo’ on X, who reports that the City manager has informed the club that he would like to add two new midfielders to his roster in the forthcoming transfer window. This message is consistent with that of the previous source.
In that period, Manchester City has exited the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage, fallen to fifth place in the Premier League table, and is currently in 22nd place in the UEFA Champions League. This has placed them at risk of a league phase exit. Additionally, they have only managed one victory.
It has been disclosed that Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle, Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, and Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad are all considered for the position.
The latter would be the most straightforward to remove “quickly” due to a release clause in his current contract. The report then shifts to Bayern Munich, where Jamal Musiala is described as Pep Guardiola’s “dream signing.” Joshua Kimmich is rumored to be considering departing the Allianz Arena in January.
Rodri’s double knee injury during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League earlier in the campaign was the first significant blow to Manchester City’s midfield of the season. Subsequently, Guardiola’s performances were impacted by fatigue.
Manchester City was compelled to employ Ilkay Gundogan and Rico Lewis in the defensive midfield position with limited success after Mateo Kovacic sustained an injury during the November international break with Croatia. This resulted in the club having two defensive midfielders out at once.
The combination of these issues and the squad’s substantially depleted rearguard has rendered selections for Pep Guardiola exceedingly challenging. Consequently, there has been an immediate call for changes to be implemented through squad investment at the earliest possible opportunity.
