‘Replaced’ by a £20m-rated England teenager who has already agreed to join Newcastle United Everton man James Trafford, a transfer target for Newcastle United, has been endorsed as the next No. 1 custodian in
England, succeeding Jordan Pickford. Alongside Pickford, the 22-year-old was summoned to Thomas Tuchel’s inaugural England squad this week. Trafford was the sole Championship player to be included in the England squad, as his exceptional performance at Burnley caught the attention of more than just Tuchel. The goalkeeper has maintained 25 clean sheets in 36 games for Burnley
thus far this season and is one of Newcastle United’s primary summer transfer targets. Burnley rejected two offers for Trafford from the Magpies last summer, with the Clarets estimating his worth at more than £20 million at the time. Newcastle is preparing to make a new move in the summer, and his performance at Turf Moor this season may have contributed to an increase in his valuation. Newcastle recruiters have been monitoring
Trafford’s progress this season in an effort to identify a long-term replacement for Nick Pope, 32, and Martin Dubravka, 36, in goal, according to The Gazette.Trafford’s value may be further elevated should he become a complete England international prior to the summer. He has been selected in the squad ahead of Pope, with Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and Dean Henderson serving as the other goalkeeping options.
The England squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia includes Newcastle’s Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, and Anthony Gordon. The provisions that Newcastle’s representatives agreed to with Trafford last summer are still “valid” in advance of the summer transfer window, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
However, the goalkeeper’s valuation is expected to increase by more than £20 million as a result of his exceptional performance for Burnley this season. On Twitter, Romano stated that Newcastle has been in personal terms with James Trafford since the summer of 2024, and the verbal agreement remains legitimate. He remains at the forefront of the roster for Newcastle’s new custodian position in the upcoming season.
