“Ridiculous” – English football pundit Alan Shearer slams Didi Hamann with a brutal message over England Euro 2024 scandal
Although Jude Bellingham hasn’t been as impressive for England in Euro 2024 as he was for Real Madrid last season, Didi Hamann’s request that he be cut has been turned down by Alan Shearer.
Alan Shearer has called Dietmar Hamann’s call for England to bench Jude Bellingham “ridiculous.” Hamann used to play for Newcastle with Shearer.
In 1998–99, Hamann played one season at St. James’ Park and said Bellingham should be benched for England’s match against Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals on Saturday. Bellingham was a huge favorite going into the event after having a great first season with Real Madrid, where he won La Liga and the Champions League, as well as the Player of the Season award in Spain’s top league.
But the 21-year-old has mostly been on the sidelines in Germany’s games so far, scoring only two important goals—one in the first game against Serbia and another in the 95th minute against Slovakia that kept England in the tournament. Shearer doesn’t think that’s enough to guarantee Bellingham’s spot in Gareth Southgate’s starting lineup, but Hamann does.
Shearer said on the show The Rest is Football, “There is no way he [Bellingham] should be dropped.” How could you abandon him? It’s not reasonable. He should definitely stay on the team and not be dropped.
As a former Germany midfielder, Hamann believes that Southgate may need to put Bellingham on the bench in order to finally bring out the attacking ability of the Three Lions. After having trouble in his less familiar role on the left flank, he pushed for Phil Foden to be moved into the central attacking part in his place.
Hamann stated, “I don’t see much hope unless Gareth Southgate changes two or three positions on the team.” Even though Southgate is letting things go, he needs to make a choice. Personally, I think that only Phil Foden or Jude Bellingham can play.
For me, you need to take Bellingham off the field and put Foden in the middle. Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon should play on the wings. What will Southgate do with Harry Kane?
Hamann also said that Bellingham “was fired up after his first six months in Madrid, but since Christmas he hasn’t done much for Real.”
Foden was named the Premier League Player of the Season for 2023–24, but he hasn’t always played as well for England as he did for Manchester City. He’s only scored four goals in 38 games, while Bellingham has scored five goals in fewer games while playing more defensively.
Southgate is more likely to agree with Shearer because of this and the fact that Bellingham is now one of the biggest football stars in the world. Since the very good Marc Guehi was suspended at center back, Southgate could use a three-man defense against Switzerland. This would mean that either Bellingham or Foden would have to make way.
