Ruben Amorim will achieve success at Manchester United as a result of the coaching lessons I provided him.

In late April 2018, Ruben Amorim was conversing with former Benfica teammates Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic at a table in the Carrington canteen. Matic fixed his gaze on the 33-year-old student and informed him that his future was already obvious. “Certainly, you will be completing your coach education,”

Matic informed Amorim, who was seated with two other pupils from his Lisbon course and Prof. Antonio Veloso, who had collaborated with Jose Mourinho to develop the course.

As part of his pursuit of a master’s degree in high-performance football coaching at the University of Lisbon, Amorim was at Carrington that week, six years ago.

Veloso and Mourinho, who had both pursued sports science at the university in the 1980s, collaborated on the course’s development.In the mid-2010s, they re-established communication, and Veloso suggested a course that would bridge the divide between the demands of senior coaching positions in the game and the academic and professional experience of Mourinho.

During his second tenure as Chelsea manager, Veloso visited Mourinho’s residence in London to complete the program, which was inspired by the attributes that Mourinho perceived as lacking when he began his coaching career.

Subsequently, the pupil who is their most distinguished alumni was admitted during the second intake of students in 2017. Amorim was 32 years old when he began playing on the course and was already contemplating his future in the sport, as he was battling a severe injury. Filipe Celikkaya, who served as the most recent coach of Sporting B, recommended him to Veloso.

He was examined prior to being granted admission to the program. “It was evident to me during the interview that he was truly dedicated and sincerely desired a management position,” Veloso stated to the Manchester Evening News.

“It was evident from the outset that he possessed a strong leadership style, but he did so with empathy and without imposing himself, despite his extensive experience as a former international.”

With all of his colleagues, he was exceedingly cordial and easygoing. Nevertheless, his opinion was consistently sought by all. “We are typically in the room discussing, sharing opinions, and participating by 8 p.m.,

despite the fact that our program runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.” Ruben has always held strong opinions; however, he has also been able to listen to the opinions of others and incorporate diverse ideas from the students.

He is extremely enthusiastic about football and has consistently expressed that his favourite pastime is observing and analysing games.

He stated, “When I have the opportunity, I enjoy watching Premier League games and examining the various options and strategies employed by the various coaches.” Amorim no longer finds that aspect enjoyable;

it has become his occupation. Matic’s comment indicated that he had a comprehensive comprehension of the game, and Veloso stated that he had a “high level of information” regarding the tactical aspects of the game upon his arrival at the course. However, the program encompasses far more than mere strategies.

Amorim perceived that the discussions regarding sports science and the methods for deconstructing the data that emerged from that discipline were highly beneficial.

He also embraced the modules that focused on communication, an area in which he currently excels.

He never assumes a position of authority. Therefore, the connection with the participants is typically quite strong.

Amazing is the connection with the technical personnel. Their linkage is phenomenally resilient. All of his technical personnel are very youthful.

“If he’s able to establish the type of empathy with the players and with the crowd, with the fans – you see everybody applauding him in the last game, you don’t have a Sporting fan saying bad things about him in this situation – and he has the emotional intelligence to be able to do that, then it could be a very good opportunity.”
