Scottish coach Peter Grant gave his reason why Daniel Kelly leaving Celtic FC to join Millwall is a bad decision
Daniel Kelly’s position at Celtic has fans stumped this summer.
After making it into Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic first team last season and getting game time, the 18-year-old playmaker looked like he had the world at his feet.
Kelly’s current deal at Celtic ends in December, and the club offered him a new one. He was said to want to stay longer, though.
The young player turned down that offer for some reason and signed a deal with English Championship team Millwall this week.
Kelly is going to make the move in January, which has made former Celtic star Peter Grant very angry.
Grant is upset with who helped Kelly make her Millwall choice.
Last night, Grant was talking with Paul Cooney about the Celtic youth players when he was asked what he thought of Daniel Kelly’s choice to join the London club.
Grant said on The Go Radio Football Show, “He was full of energy and a good football player.” A great football player, he seemed to really understand the game and scored a great goal at one of the games I saw.
“But I don’t know who is telling and leading these boys.” Millwall? Celtic? “Come on.”
When Cooney saw that Grant was upset, he told the former Celtic player that he looked like he was angry about the choice. Grant then said, “I can’t understand it.” Listen, there’s no way that going to Millwall is better than having a chance to play at Celtic.
“You must also be ready to fight.” What I’d ask him most now is, “Am I ever going to get a chance, no matter how well I do?” Am I going to be able to stay on the team? Do I regularly have the chance to be on the pitch?
“That’s the question.” It’s okay if the answer is no. For that matter, Celtic don’t think much of you either.
However, I have to believe the club when they say they are offering him a great deal and lots of chances.
“But I don’t think it’s right for you to leave Celtic to go to Millwall.”
Why did young Kelly choose Millwall? No one really knows for sure. Moving to the English second level might have seemed like a good idea to him.
He may have been told that he would play more than he did at Celtic. Or maybe they couldn’t say no to the money. No one would be mad at the young man if it was.
Celtic only needs to make sure that they don’t make the same mistake again next summer and don’t let the contracts of their best young players run out so close to the end of their contracts before choosing to extend them.
