Even though it was a big deal when James Forrest returned to the Scotland team after being away for three years, the Celtic player didn’t play a single minute at Euro 2024.

Forrest played in a warm-up game against Gibraltar, but that was the only time he played for his country this summer.

Even though Scotland had a hard time making chances and finding a spark in the end, they were one of the worst attacking teams in the whole event.

While Forrest may not have fixed all of Steve Clarke’s problems, some thought he should have had a chance to make a difference off the bench in at least one of the three games.

Kevin Gallacher, a former hero for Scotland, feels bad for Forrest’s disappointing summer and thinks he may have shown that he can still perform on the world stage.

The 53-times-capped forward told the Sunday Post on June 30, 2006, that it was the hardest thing to take as an older player. You know what to do because you’ve been through it all before, and all you want is a small chance. People will see what you can do and think the old dog still has life in it.

“That’s how James would have seen it.” It was his job to help the other players, and I’m sure he would have taken a chance if it came up.

“But we don’t know what Steve Clarke thought.” He might have had to change the way the team was put together to give James a game. Something like that is something the boss needs to think about.

Forrest’s place as a veteran in the squad can still work.
At this point, Forrest is expected to say goodbye to the international set-up.

His future isn’t completely clear even at the Bhoys. Yes, he did play a useful brief role in the second half of last season, giving Brendan Rodgers a choice when new signings didn’t work out.

However, it would be ideal for Celtic to try to improve their wide players this summer through transfers.

Even though he only has one year left on his contract, Rodgers won’t rush to get rid of him without having someone else in place that he can trust. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Forrest made a good impact again next year.
