The (3) three Major things the newly signed USWNT coach Emma Hayes’ must do for United States women’s national soccer team to secure the teams future
Prior to the Olympics, Hayes will have a very limited window of opportunity.
The United States women’s soccer team has officially named Emma Hayes as their new head coach. After former head coach Vlatko Andonovski stepped down in August after the USWNT’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup exit in the round of 16, the search for a new head coach got underway, and the federation has now settled on a candidate they hope will take the team to Paris for the 2024 Olympics and beyond.
Think again about who can play
The little period between a World Cup and the Olympics isn’t often when invested coaches go making huge lineup changes, but she can still rotate players. Given Hayes’s physical absence from the team until June, the likelihood of that happening may be much lower. Therefore, it’s more probable that the present group of players will be regulars for the next eight months.
Introducing fresh faces could take up to a year, but that doesn’t mean new names stay. Preparation for the Paris Olympics will not include Jaedyn Shaw or Mia Fishel, but their ongoing development could be an extra element. Her skills as a scout and developer will serve Hayes well in her new position, which requires her to think about the team’s long-term goals in terms of its roster.
Catarina Macario and Fishel are already part of Hayes’ Chelsea team. Next year, Hayes will relocate to Chicago, which is already home to U.S. Soccer headquarters and the Chicago Red Stars, Mal Swanson’s NWSL team. Players like Macario and Swanson are figuring out how to get back into the game, and as the Olympics approach, their positions might need reevaluation.
Things that Emma Hayes should prioritize right now include the following:
Share the objective
In September, after Andonovski resigned, U.S. sporting director Matt Crocker detailed the steps he will take to find a new head coach. In his wish list for the future USWNT head coach, he included the ability to effectively communicate with players and staff.
Going ahead, Hayes will undoubtedly supply it for her employees and athletes. Her ability to build rapport with her players and help them see their value on teams filled with dynamic individuals has garnered her praise in the past. Rotating players on a club level is nothing new for her, but when it comes to the national team, where most coaches choose their starting lineups in advance of international events, she will have a new task.
