What Tim Lovejoy “can’t deny” when he debates whether Celtic is a more significant club than

Chelsea A club of Celtic’s magnitude is invariably subject to comparison with its southern counterparts, particularly during Champions League week. Celtic’s (and other Scottish teams’) results are frequently compared to those of Premier League clubs in Europe by the broadcast media in England, despite the significant disparities in the resources and quality of players available to the Scottish champions. It is a perplexing obsession that has resurfaced as former Soccer AM presenter Tim Lovejoy now debates whether Celtic are a more significant club than Chelsea. During the Chelsea discussion, Tim Lovejoy acknowledged that Celtic is a “huge club.” When the Chelsea discussion arose, Lovejoy, a Chelsea devotee himself, was conducting a quiz in which one of his co-hosts, Alex, was required to respond to six questions about Celtic. In an interview with Soccer A-Z, Lovejoy stated, “Alex is asked six questions this week.” The Lisbon Lions, who were also winning European Cups in 1967, have won the Scottish League 54 times.

Tubes, what are your thoughts on that? Tubes replied, “Are you telling me that you think Celtic are a bigger team than Chelsea?” Lovejoy: “I’m not saying that.” Tubes: “That’s what you normally do in this quiz. Typically, that is the case. Lovejoy: “Football is not fair, Tubes.” Tubes: “You’ve not answered the question here, Tim. Are you saying Celtic are a stronger team than Chelsea?” Comparing Celtic’s main honours to Chelsea Talk of being a large club is often conflated with the argument of who has the most money and not based on such things as a worldwide fan base or silverware that has been won. Celtic’s trophy history is rich and one that is steeped in romance and also earned with the need of significant financial backing from an outside party.

It is important to mention that Chelsea’s success was significantly influenced by their acquisition by Roman Abramovich in 2003. The Russian magnate rescued the London club from a financial crisis and invested hundreds of millions of pounds in Chelsea, thereby making them the wealthiest club in the world at one point. Would Chelsea have achieved that level of success without the substantial investment in the club? It is exceedingly improbable.
