The sporting director of Barcelona has broken his reticence regarding the dismissal of Xavi, stating that he has no regrets.Deco, the sporting director of
Barcelona, has stated unequivocally that he has no remorse regarding the manner in which Xavi’s departure from the club transpired last year. One of the most significant obstacles he encountered upon assuming the role of sporting director was the responsibility of managing a managerial transition.
Although the decision to part ways with Xavi was not entirely his own, he played a significant role in the process, working in conjunction with the club’s athletic commission and president Joan Laporta. It is important to mention that Xavi had initially proclaimed his resignation at the end of January in response to a significant loss to Villarreal.
Nevertheless, it was determined that he would remain until the conclusion of the season, rather than departing immediately. This protracted farewell resulted in substantial speculation and debate regarding the club’s future course. In the end, Barcelona elected to replace him with Hansi Flick.
Deco has acknowledged that the decision to part ways with Xavi was not a simple one, particularly in light of his significant contributions to the club. He arrived at a challenging juncture and even managed to secure a league championship. “Xavi’s departure was a difficult decision, as he had won a league and had stepped into a challenging situation for the club.
However, the previous season was difficult in every way, and we ultimately decided that the best course of action was to make a change on the bench,” he explained to SPORT.”I have no regrets, as I consistently express my beliefs and thoughts in person.”
“Xavi will forever be a significant individual and a friend to me.” He continues to hold Xavi in high regard, acknowledging his significant contributions as both a player and a coach. Nevertheless, he recognizes that football is unpredictable, and at times, adjustments are necessary to ensure the club’s success.
“He has been a teammate and is a highly significant figure in the club’s history, one of the most significant players in Barça’s history,” he observed. Deco maintains his commitment to the decision, asserting that he consistently articulates his opinions with candor and is steadfast in his beliefs, despite the challenges.
