On Wednesday night, fans at St. James’ Park will wear black and white scarves to a very important Champions League game between Newcastle United and AC Milan. The winners will move on to the next round.
Both teams have five points and are tied for first place in Group F. The Magpies currently have a better goal difference than the Rossoneri, but other teams still need to win in order to stay at the top table in Europe for a little while longer.
When Newcastle played Paris Saint-Germain two weeks ago, the big VAR argument started up again. An Alexander Isak goal in the first half put the Magpies on the verge of what could have been their most famous continental victory ever.
But in extra time, the ball hit Tino Livramento on the elbow and bounced off of his thigh. Referee Szymon Marciniak decided to give PSG a last-second penalty, which Kylian Mbappe scored to keep the Magpies from winning all three points in the cruelest and most controversial way possible.
There is still hope for the third-placed hosts, though. They still have the better head-to-head record against PSG, who are only two points ahead of them. If Newcastle wins on Wednesday and Les Parisiens fails to beat already-qualified Borussia Dortmund, Eddie Howe’s team will go through.
If things didn’t go as planned, the Magpies would either have to play in the Europa League or be kicked off the continent altogether. Despite doing a great job of playing through injuries, Howe’s team seems to have run out of choices at the worst possible time.
In fact, Newcastle’s last two Premier League games, against Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, were both losses, with a total score of 7-1. However, neither of those games took place at St. James’ Park, where Newcastle has won eight of their last nine games in all competitions.
