Scottish football player Peter Grant explains the major problem referees are facing after Hearts vs Celtic Fc VAR controversy
After seeing what happened with VAR at Hearts last weekend, Peter Grant is sure that there is a big problem with judges that needs to be fixed.
Brendan Rodgers found out yesterday what would happen with Hyunjun Yang’s request for a red card. Grant thinks that the addition of VAR has created a new issue that Scottish football needs to talk to the referees about.
It was a terrible game, Grant said on The Go Radio Football Show. It was awful to see. Listen, I know how hard things are for the guys.
“But now that VAR is in play, the pressure is even higher on them.”
“Because they’re being caught now.” The trouble is that they won’t say they were wrong.
“That’s the main problem.”
That is a big problem, but not as big as the referees using technology.
A lot of people are saying that games are being re-refereed because managers think VAR is being used in places it shouldn’t be.
It was clear to everyone that Tomoki Iwata’s handball was not a handball. It was clear that the midfielder didn’t know where the ball was and didn’t try to get an edge by hitting it away with his arm.
When replays were shown, that was clear, and the fact that it was still given after two professional judges saw what happened is really strange.
But Grant might be a little off when he says that refs won’t admit when they were wrong about big calls. They have never. Well, not in public anyway.
I can see why Yang was given the red card. If you show someone that still and the play order used in the VAR video, they will say it was a clear flag.
Of course, the fact that the judge got it right in real time shows that a yellow card was enough and VAR wasn’t needed.
It seems likely that more of these things will happen as the title race comes to a close.
