“Advanced discussions”: Manchester United nears an agreement to acquire a 17-year-old as their first January acquisition.Manchester United is nearing an agreement to acquire Callan McKenna, a gifted adolescent goalkeeper.
Although Callan McKenna would be joining the Manchester United academy rather than Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup, he would be the club’s first acquisition at any level in January. Additionally, he possesses prior experience with the first team.Manchester United are reportedly in advanced negotiations with McKenna’s club, Queen’s Park in Scotland, according to the Daily Record.
‘Loaded with add-ons’ that could bring the charge to seven figures, the transfer fee would reportedly be in the six figures.Practising Callan McKenna
17-year-old Callan McKenna has already made his debut with the second-tier Scottish club Queen’s Park.
Early in his career, McKenna participated in the junior academy of Celtic. Subsequently, in 2021, he signed with Hibernian and Queen’s Park.
He has now advanced through the levels, having appeared in nine games for the Spiders’ first team while maintaining two clean sheets.Prior to sustaining an injury, he began the season as their starting quarterback at the age of 16. However, he has since been relegated to the bench in recent contests. The date of his seventeenth birthday was the end of December.
According to a report in The Record, Manchester United have surpassed Arsenal and Chelsea in the contest for his signature.
McKenna is an international for Scotland at the under-19 level, in addition to under-18 and under-17 levels.
At Manchester United, it is difficult to break through at the goalkeeper position, but the club is always looking to add new talent. McKenna’s prior experience in the first team will serve him well and may even better prepare him to continue his development during loan spells.Recruitment of Britons is crucial for the Manchester United academy.
Similar to Alejandro Garnacho, Manchester United can no longer turn abroad to acquire the best young players from Atletico Madrid.
This is due to the implementation of Brexit regulations at the end of 2020, which rendered Willy Kambwala the final foreign adolescent to be signed.
The rule change has increased United’s desire to sign the finest talent in the United Kingdom; Cardiff signed Wales youth international striker Gabriele Biancheri in January of last year.United remains a club that provides opportunities for the most promising young players; last night, Omari Forson became the most recent youth to make his debut with the first team.
