Derby County boosted at perfect time before Championship decider

Derby County handed major boost as Max Johnston returns to training ⚡⚽

Derby County have received a timely lift ahead of the final stretch of the Championship season, with defender Max Johnston back in training.

The Scotland international was spotted in sessions this week as the Rams continue their push for a top-six finish. Images released by the club showed Johnston working alongside teammates, including Derry Murkin, as manager John Eustaceput non-international players through their paces.

Injury setbacks have stalled Johnston’s season

It’s been a frustrating campaign for Johnston since his move from Sturm Graz last summer. After beginning to find form, a hamstring injury picked up against Queens Park Rangers in October halted his progress.

Just as he looked set to return after the New Year, another setback followed — this time a calf injury — further delaying his comeback.

Return could be crucial for Derby’s play-off push

Now, however, the right-back appears to be edging closer to full fitness, which could prove vital for Derby as they approach the final games of the season.

In his absence, Joe Ward has stepped up impressively to fill the role, but Johnston’s return would provide a significant boost in both depth and quality.

Support behind the scenes

Earlier this month, Eustace revealed that the squad had rallied around Johnston during his difficult spell on the sidelines.

“We are making sure he is being looked after,” the Derby boss said. “The players in the dressing room are supporting him, but it’s been frustrating. Hopefully we can get him back before the end of the season.”
