Celtic fined by UEFA after fan protest during Stuttgart clash 💸🍀
Celtic FC have been hit with a £13,000 fine by UEFA following crowd trouble during last month’s match against VfB Stuttgart.
The punishment comes after supporters threw tennis balls onto the pitch in protest over the club’s current situation, particularly frustrations surrounding the Green Brigade lockout. The incident caused a delay of more than three minutes during the game at Celtic Park.
Match disruption and fallout
The match itself ended in disappointment for Celtic, who suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat after the disruption. UEFA later charged the club under its “throwing of objects” regulations.
Manager Martin O’Neill did not hold back in his reaction, criticizing the protest and its impact on the team.
He said that such actions send the wrong message and weaken the intimidating atmosphere Celtic Park was once known for, recalling a time when top European sides were wary of playing there.
Mixed fortunes in the return leg
Celtic responded in the return fixture with a 1-0 win, thanks to an early goal from Luke McCowan. However, the victory was not enough to keep their European hopes alive, as they were ultimately eliminated.
Meanwhile, Stuttgart were also punished by UEFA, receiving a £19,500 fine for fan behaviour during the second leg, related to displaying an inappropriate message.
