England 63-year-old legend Gary Lineker reacts to Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo promotion in the England senior squad with an uplifting message
Kobbie Mainoo, a midfielder for Manchester United, has been promoted to the England national team for the first time. He will play in friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
The legendary Gary Lineker praised Gareth Southgate’s management after he chose Kobbie Mainoo, a young player from Manchester United, for the first time in the senior team.
This season, Mainoo has been a big surprise for United. He moved into the middle after getting hurt in preseason and has been great there. A lot of people have praised the teenager for not being afraid and for being able to pick up the ball and go after opponents.
Some United fans thought Mainoo should have been called up to Southgate’s England team when it was announced last week. However, the 18-year-old didn’t seem upset as he led the Man Utd to an FA Cup win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. His performance was so good that even Jurgen Klopp praised him after he was taken off.
On Tuesday, Southgate changed his mind about telling Mainoo to wait longer before being called up to the senior team. He chose to add him to the group for this week’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium instead. The England team now has 26 players; at this point, no one has been forced to leave because they are hurt.
When asked about the move to add Mainoo to the team, Lineker wrote on Twitter, “Much deserved and a good decision by Gareth Southgate.” The young star from United’s school won’t set any records if he plays his first game for England during the break.
At 17 years, 2 months, and 14 days, Theo Walcott is still the youngest player to ever play for England. Mainoo is joined by Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford, both of whom play for Manchester United.
