It really came as a surprise to Celtic fans when Carl Starfelt joined the team last summer.

It was already bad enough that we lost Ange Postecoglou and Jota over the summer. Now we lose one of our best defenders as well.

Some people said terrible things about the big Swede, but he and Cameron Cameron Carter-Vickers made a great defense that won five of six titles, including a record-setting eighth domestic treble.

For many, the reason he left was because his partner, Jacinta Galabadaarachchi, left to go to Portugal. But writer Michael Gannon doesn’t think that’s true.

Even more, Gannon says that the reasons or excuses that were being used to explain why Starfelt left to join Jacynta are not true.

In a Record Celtic podcast, Gannon said, “The girlfriend thing was a bit of a sideshow.” He got a better deal in Spain that he liked, so he took it.

“I feel like the girlfriend thing was just a distraction.”

Celtic will miss Carl Starfelt.
Carl Starfelt was a great defender for Celtic, no matter what anyone says.

From the moment Starfelt signed to the time he played his first game against Hearts at the start of the 2021 season, a story came together around him.

Starfelt was almost instantly seen as a dud after a rough start in a 2-1 loss at Tynecastle. However, the Hoops never lost a game when he played with Carter-Vickers in the middle of the Celtic defense.

In the summer, Celtic paid more than £7 million to try to get Starfelt replaced. Even though Liam Scales has been great this season, does he have what it takes to lead the club forward? Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke have both failed to make the team. Most of all in Europe.

Brendan Rodgers will have to make a lot of changes at Celtic this summer, including at center back. This is because if Celtic wins the league this season and automatically qualifies for next year’s Champions League, the players we currently have won’t be good enough to compete with the best teams in Europe.
