The injury to Reo Hatate was the hardest thing for Brendan Rodgers to handle at Celtic this season.

It’s crazy that the Japanese player has missed 34 games this season because of hamstring and calf injuries, and no one at Celtic has stepped up to fill his spot on the team. (Transfer Market)

Of course, Odin Thiago Holm, David Turnbull, Tomoki Iwata, and Paulo Bernardo have all been brought in by Brendan Rodgers to try to fill the gap.

Iwata has only recently stepped up after getting hurt himself, and earlier in the season, Bernardo seemed to be picked over all four.

The return of Hatate, on the other hand, has shown where Bernardo falls short, and Pat Bonner, a former Celtic star, has talked about how the Japanese defender is much better than the Portuguese player.

It is said by Bonner that Bernardo will “never” be as clever as Hatate.

Bonner was checking out Hatate’s return and said that there are many things about him that make him “the difference” between the two players.

Bonner said on the Scottish Football Podcast, “When a player who has been out for a long time comes back, it’s just his impact on the game and the way he plays it.”

The player doesn’t always stay in one spot; he moves around, but he’s always going forward.

“Most of the time, when he gets the ball, he’s open on that half-turn. He can see a pass.”

“That lets players who don’t have the ball make runs that they might not make when, I’m sorry, I have to compare him to Bernardo because he plays the same position on the left side of a midfield three as Bernardo, but Bernardo always has his back to the other team’s goal.”

“He keeps the ball pretty well, but he’ll never be as creative as Hatate, which is the difference.”

Rodgers gets a huge help from Hatate’s return. It could not have come at a better time, as the important Glasgow Derby is coming up.

There will be a lot of space between the two clubs until April 10, when Rangers play their home game against Dundee. If they win on Sunday, the title race will be over.

Rodgers and his team have every reason to win. Now all they need is for players like Hatate to show how good they are and beat Rangers at Ibrox this week.
