Reportedly, Barcelona has extended an offer of Lionel Messi’s renowned number 10 uniform to Mason Greenwood.Since joining Getafe on loan from Manchester United this summer, Greenwood has contributed to the club’s ascent to eighth place in the La Liga standingswith five goals and four assists.

Additionally, the Sun reports that Barcelona are preparing a £40 million offer for the 22-year-old forward, whereas Getafe are intent on signing him permanently. Scouts from Barcelona have observed the forward in action during their 3-0 victory over Sevilla, 1-0 home victory against Valencia, and 3-3 stalemate with Atletico Madrid.

The Catalan giants are also reportedly planning to offer Greenwood the club’s emblematic number 10 shirt as a convincing concession to bring him to the Nou Camp. The number 10 jersey of Barcelona was formerly adorned by Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner who retired from the club in August 2021 after amassing 303 assists and 672 goals in 778 appearances.

The shirt was subsequently transferred to academy product Ansu Fati by Barcelona. However, it has been without a proprietor since the Spain international’s loan transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

United determined Greenwood had no future with the club; consequently, the player is resuming his professional journey in Spain. The charges of attempted rape, coercive behaviour, and assault resulting in actual bodily injury against the striker were dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service in February. This decision was influenced by the withdrawal of a crucial witness and the introduction of fresh evidence.

Following an internal investigation carried out by United, it was ultimately “mutually” determined that Greenwood should continue his career in an unaffiliated capacity away from Old Trafford, which benefited all parties involved.

Wilson denied the allegations at all times, whereas United stated, following the conclusion of their investigation, that “Mason did not commit the charges against him initially.”
